Overwintering can be a trying time… limited sunny skies and
enforced long periods of nothing much to do once maintenance tasks are finished
but MDR made it a darn sight easier this year.
Located on the south coast of Sicily it maybe windier than a
lot of places we have stayed but it is also a hell of a load warmer! The marina
was totally secure despite having no other protection than the walls themselves
so our decision to break with the traditional “can’t see the sea, must be good”
rule pays off. 
The tiny resort town that surround the marina is really
pretty (and clean!) and surprisingly friendly.
It’s great to have the place to yourself during the week and then mingle
with the locals come passeggiata on the weekends. We “hear” that MDR is a “neutral” territory
on Sicily where all the different clans have holiday houses and as such it is
very safe (and clean!). It also features
a lot on “Montalbano” (if you haven’t seen this TV show or read the books…
please do!) and in fact over the course of the winter we see many scenes being
shot… oohhh too cool… oops panty liner please!
There is a huge community of other liveaboards overwintering
there as well, which is great, as there are always things going on to pass the
time. This winter it was all about the
gym, yoga, the Stella Marina Bar, sailing talks, pot luck dinners, curry
nights, dance parties, swapping films and TV series, line dancing, bitch and
stitch and and and… and of course just general socialising!
That being said we did also tried to fit in some traveling
around Sicily itself and found some really cool places. Three stand outs were…

I can’t say Sicily is my favourite Italian island but it is
certainly an interesting one and I wouldn’t be averse to returning to explore
its other nooks and crannies.
