Finally we get a good wind to make the crossing to Giglio…
big following sea and plenty of oomph in the sails…
Rounding the point towards the harbour we are greeted by the
sight of the Costa Concordia. A very
sobering sight indeed… forlorn and rotting, the hulk partially lists just north
of the harbour entrance. We decide to
give the harbour a miss and anchor in the bay just south. Giglio turns out to be a windy place… we lose
another oar in a katabatic down draught overnight!... but a great island for
walking. Wow to the wildflowers – molto
carino! The harbour is cute but not very
yacht friendly, (Later we hear a horror
story of a man who left his boat backed onto and tied to the quay only to come
back to see it being towed into the harbour.
The “kind” souls who rescued it claimed it had been drifting out to sea
and they claimed salvage rights to it… he ended up losing the boat in a court
case… not a happy tale!) and everywhere
you look there are dive teams and salvage workers towering over the locals in a
loud, robust “all American” sort of way.
We would love to stay longer by the bays are not that sheltered so we
move over to the mainland. Its
liberation day… what’s that about?? Who
were they liberated from?? It’s not a
very interesting coastline in this area – low rolling hills and coastal plains
dotted with power stations, still Roma
domani!
