Before I start afresh with Krka National Park and beyond I thought I would just mention a couple of places we enjoyed but I forgot to mention previously.
Rogoznica; This place really grew on us, which was just as
well as we spent a lot of time here and even revisited accidently a couple of
times due to adverse weather conditions! A fantastic bolthole and pleasantly
underwhelming on the historical front which makes for a relaxing stop… nothing
to see or do, will do us at times… yes I know the Dragons Eye Lake is there but
not the easiest to get to…
Anyway back into the timeline proper.
Having chugged our way upriver to Skradin we chose to
longline to the shore downstream of the town. A tranquil anchorage and far from
the madding crowds trying to get into the Krka Falls. The weather is smoking
hot and Bramble takes a “raincheck” on the park visit to instead relax in her
air-conditioned boudoir.
Thankfully we managed to get on the first boat trip of the day and enjoyed a fairly leisurely wander around the majority of the first half of the park. It sure is popular though and by the time we make our way back around the maze of boardwalks the once picturesque falls is a seething mass of sweating bodies and a thick layer of sunscreen shimmers on the surface of the water… wow… what a difference a couple of hours makes!
Next port of call is the tiny town of Prvic. We hadn’t
intended on stopping here but glad we did. What a unique place. A tiny island (only
2.37km2) with the wow factor. Stop here even if it is just to see the amazing
Faust Vrancic exhibition… very Leonardo Di Vinci.

Zadar is a fantastic little city and we bond with it
immediately. It may be slightly hippy, slightly grubby and slightly chaotic but
it definitely knows its own mind and the people are the friendliest so far.
From the amazing sea organ to the roman ruins; from the rundown seagates to the
maze of back streets in the old quarter we find the whole place fascinating and
Zadar rapidly becomes our favourite big town in Croatia. What a great place to
spend your 46th birthday… yep that’s me, another year older.
From Zadar we continue north slowly. Pottering from bay to
bay; taking our time, relaxing in the sun and spending time as a pack. Bramble
is slowly withdrawing from us. Happy in her world but pulling back from life;
readying herself for her last great adventure. We will continue as long as we
can but we are all desperately aware that time is slipping away and shortly things
will never be the same again.
Dugi Otok turns out to be our last island together and what
a wonderful place to say our goodbyes in private. Bramble continued to enjoy
her short and slow strolls, extra special cuddles and lavish attention but by
the time we come to leave she is virtually blind and becoming increasingly
incontinent. Finally the sad day comes and we must return to Zadar to face
reality. And so it was on the 7th of September 2015, in a peaceful
room, surrounded by much love, our greatest treasure slipped her skin and moved
on to new hunting grounds.
Back on board Bramble is not herself and rather worryingly
the next morning she has a very mild and short seizure. This is not a good sign
but she seems happy enough and keen to go walking although a bit slow. We
decide to head back down river and take things easy for a bit.
| Close quarters anchoring... yes there was a whole bay to go at and only two of us anchored! |
On towards Zadar and we briefly call in at Preko before
heading across to Zadar. Bramble is definitely under the weather but at this
point we are beginning to realise that anything a vet might have to say won’t
help matters and Bramble has had enough of needles and well-meaning harassment
to last many lifetimes.
Needless to say we were devastated. Time had no meaning and
we were rudderless without our bossy little bundle of energy. We took her on a
last road trip to Samobor near Zagreb and had her beautiful body cremated so she could continue the long journey home with us. A
befitting final adventure in Croatia; filled with gentle people, kind words and great memories.
Happy hunting little pup… you will always be the queen of my heart.
